Carbon Footprint & Net Zero – The Future for Projects

As part of TSA’s continued commitment to sustainability, a core group of our Project Managers from across our offices participated in a training program led by The Footprint Company.

The training was designed to help them better understand carbon in the built environment, what it means to be ‘net zero’ and practical ways to reduce a development’s carbon footprint.

Our people participated in working groups to use The Footprint Company’s Footprint Calculator and Greenbook to explore the impacts that different construction materials, methodologies and building operations have on the carbon footprint of a development over its life, and the importance of a circular economy.

Carbon Lifecycle of a Building

We learnt the technical complexities behind the definition of ‘net zero’ as well as methods and standards for the measurement of carbon in the built environment. We also developed our understanding of the carbon intensity of a variety of different project types including commercial buildings, airports, hospitals, schools, and entire precincts. We then identified ways that carbon mitigation can be achieved throughout the project delivery process.

This training helped us to developed practical skills to help our clients develop carbon briefs for the various stages of a project. We encourage our people to act as influencers, encouraging clients to embrace the net zero challenge. This influence is important from the early stages of a project with targets, budgets and performance specification targets set to help reach net zero.
