RMIT School of Education

The School of Education within RMIT was located across four levels of Building 220, on the Bundoora West Campus. RMIT’s building was being underutilised and was not fit-for-purpose. This was evidenced by the strategic masterplan of space utilisation, asset management data and the schools business plan.

TSA Riley developed the business case to refurbish three levels (circa 7500m2 with a budget of $7.5m), and consolidate the School of Education across two levels with a third for campus-wide use.

Seconded into the RMIT team, TSA Riley provided project management services including design management, consultant procurement and management for the upgrades. Level 1 was refurbished with two general learning and teaching (L&T) spaces and secure research material storage. Level 2 is dedicated to innovative teaching and learning spaces consisting of five L&T rooms, student break out spaces, press play recording studio, amenities and quiet study areas.

Level 3 created new collaborative staff accommodation, with individual offices, shared offices, open plan workspaces, small and medium-sized meeting rooms, quiet spaces and group communal spaces.

The design aligned with RMIT and the schools Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) through:

  • Collaborative teaching space pedagogy.
  • Indigenous Australian naming of the spaces included within the signage package with room signs including name, phonetics and translation.

In addition to project management, TSA Riley provided change and communication services, for the transition to activity-based working in the new collaborative spaces.
