Cromwell Memorial Hall

A contemporary civic space that combines, remembrance, creativity and community connection.

On the shores of Lake Dunstan, one of Central Otago’s most significant civic projects is underway. The new Cromwell Memorial Hall will replace a much-loved 60-year-old Hall, originally built by the community after World War II to honour the service of the region’s veterans.

To support a growing and diverse community, the new facility will provide modern, flexible spaces for arts, culture and events. It will include an approx. 400-seat auditorium, museum, 40-seat cinema, café, and multiple community and event spaces. Overlooking the lake, it's set to become a new cultural drawcard for Cromwell, hosting performance, gatherings and community events.

The design acknowledges the site’s heritage and the original Hall’s purpose as a site of commemoration. A burning flame memorial will be relocated to the entrance of the new venue, ensuring remembrance remains central. Materials from the former Hall have been salvaged for potential reuse, preserving local history and maintaining a connection with the past.

Set to become the cultural heart of Central Otago, the new centre will be a place for remembrance, celebration, learning and connection – a contemporary hub that honours the past, supports creative expression and brings the community together for generations to come.
