Nelson Hospital Emergency Department Expansion
Health New Zealand

Completed within a live emergency department, with patient care maintained around the clock.
Nelson Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) has completed a significant expansion, with all stages officially opened in April 2026. The upgraded facility is already delivering tangible benefits to patients and frontline staff, providing more space, increased treatment capacity, and a clinical environment equipped to meet growing demand.
The expansion increases treatment spaces from 23 to 29, including new triage and isolation facilities, observation bays, and improved staff amenities. This investment supports national targets for shorter ED stays and improved health outcomes.
Project delivery that kept care moving.
TSA Riley proudly provided project management services across all phases of construction, working closely with Nelson Hospital’s infrastructure and clinical teams to carefully sequence works within a fully operational hospital environment to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
Through meticulous planning, real-time coordination, and proactive stakeholder engagement, our team maintained continuity across the programme. Daily site meetings with clinical leaders, adaptive scheduling in response to operational needs, and strong collaboration with contractors and council were central to the project’s success.
