Cancer care, closer to home for the Taranaki community.
Until now, Taranaki radiation therapy patients faced travelling to Palmerston North for treatment. The new Te Hōpua Whakahauroa, Taranaki Cancer Centre changes that, bringing radiation, chemotherapy, haematology, and specialist outpatient services together, locally.
Located on the Taranaki Base Hospital campus, the 1,600 sqm facility includes the region’s first linear accelerator (LINAC), enabling patients to receive advanced cancer treatment while staying close to whānau and support networks.
Delivering a project of this complexity in a live hospital environment required careful sequencing, strong communication, and collaboration. TSA Riley provided full project management services from concept to commissioning, coordinating with engineering, ICT, clinical, and operational teams to integrate specialist equipment and critical infrastructure.
Key features include:
- A LINAC bunker with advanced IL3 seismic design
- Chemotherapy suite with 10 chairs and 2 isolation rooms
- Eight consultation rooms, plus whānau and staff facilities
The Centre reflects a strong commitment to clinical excellence, community wellbeing and sustainability, targeting a Green Star 5 certification. It brings cancer care close to home, in a setting that supports patients, whānau and clinical teams.
